Current Information:Age-22 Born-Stoke Newington London Rifle Brigade Cemetery, Ploegsteert
On 4th January, 1915, the 5th London battalion of 11 Brigade of 4th Division were relieved from the trenches in Ploegsteert and moved back to billets at the old Brewery where they remained until 7th January when they took over a new line from the River Warnave to the Estaminet trench. Edgar Corble was killed on 5th January (6th January according to some sources) but the battalion diary has no information concerning his death. The attrition rate among British soldiers on the Western Front was on average 300 each day and 60% of these were as a result of shellfire. When not involved in an actual battle it was either shell fire or a sniper’s bullet that caused most deaths and injuries. |
